Page 1 of 2 I updated my Nexus One to Froyo using the manual update method on Friday. The first feature that I had to discuss with an article was the wifi tethering feature. This takes the 3G internet connection I have with the phone and allows it to be used by any other device I wish over wifi. Very cool feature, in fact I am writing and submitting this article using the wi-fi hotspot on my computer as a good test.
Sure on the market there are a few tether programs available, such as EasyTether and PdaNet. Those were ok, however you had to pay after the trial period to be able to use https sites (such as the login to gmail). Furthermore I could not get these to expose a connection to multiple devices with out a wire ( I know that PdaNet allowed for bluetooth DUN, which I tried a few times and was unsuccessful). Google just made these products obsolete with Froyo, especially since they are not free to get the full versions.
Either way, now that I am running Froyo I do not require a 3rd party app, or a wire to do it. Tethering is done in the Wireless & Networks section in the Settings menu and then under the Tethering & portable hotspot. Once in there you can enable either the USB tethering (in case you need to charge your phone at the same time you share your connection) or the portable wifi hotspot (which basically transforms your phone into a wireless router so you can have any device capably of wifi connect to it and use the phone's internet connection). Oddly enough the 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot' setting is in the tether settings and in the 'Portable Wi-Fi hotspot settings'. |
